Why Get Certified?
Local, State and Federal government agencies spend billions of dollars annually with small businesses. By law these agencies and their prime contractors must allocate a percentage of its contract dollars to small, minority, veteran and women-owned businesses. So if you are in a designated group, get your business certifications so you can bid on contracts that can grow your business!
What Certifications Do You Require?
The SBA 8(a) Certification is the "golden apple" of small business programs, allowing opportunities for sole source awards, set asides and preferential treatment in contracting.
The SBA 8(a) certification gives minority and women-owned businesses a greater advantage to the many available government contracts. 8(a) firms can be awarded a contract of up to $3.5 (for services) or $5.5M (for manufacturing) without having to compete, in the normal sense.
Other business certifications to help small and minority-owned businesses to compete for contracts include, but are not limited to:
- SBA HubZone
- SBA WOSB (Woman Owned Small Business)
- SDVOB (Serviced Disabled Veteran Owned Business) with VetBiz.com
- MBE (Minority Business Enterprise)
- WBE (Women Business Enterprise)
- DBE (Disadvantage Business Enterprise)
